GENT.
James
Cagney & Bette Davis,
Alice White, Joe Sawyer, Hobart Cavanaugh.
Dir: Michael Curtiz,
1934, Warner Bros.
SYNOPSIS:
A
wisecracking, handsome criminal swindles posh people out of their fortunes
by filling unclaimed estates with his own heirs.
"When I
heard I was going to play another of those guys, I said to myself
'They want another of those mugs, I'll really give them a mug!' so
I had my head shaved right down to the skull except for a little top
knot in front and I had the makeup man put bottle scars all over the
back of my head. Mike Curtiz damn near fainted. Hal Wallis, who was running
part of the studio at the time, took my haircut as a personal affront.
'What's that son-of-a-bitch trying to do to me now?' he said."
- Jimmy Cagney.
REVIEWS:
"Fast and flip, rough and rowdy."
