THE
ST
LOUIS KID.
James
Cagney & Patricia Ellis,
Hobart Cavanaugh, Spencer Charters.
Dir: Ray Enright, 1934, Warner Bros.
SYNOPSIS:
A
hot-headed (natch) truck driver takes the side of down-trodden dairy
farmers against some corporate big cheeses.
"I was
so fed up with walking in and punching people again and again that I
had my hands wrapped in bandages.... for the rest of the picture I went
around hitting people with my head, all of this in a specific attempt
to vary the old formula. I can still hear the reedy voice of St
Louis Kid's producer, 'When are you going to take those bandages
off and start hitting people?' In his book, I was simply trying to
foul up his living."
- Jimmy Cagney.
REVIEWS:
"Modest
star action comedy with a fair amount to amuse."
- Leslie Halliwell.
"Jimmy in another slugger role, with results this
time not so satisfactory."
- Variety.
