TORRID
ZONE.
James
Cagney & Pat O Brien,
Ann Sheridan, Helen Vinson, George Tobias.
Dir: William Keighley,
1940, MGM.
SYNOPSIS:
A
memorable teaming up of the old-skool Warner Bros crew in a tale about
bandits, a showgirl and a bad-tempered banana plantation manager.
"This is
the picture I call Hildy Lohnson Among the Bananas because it's
really just a reworking of the play The Front Page. Because the
storyline was so terribly predictable, I thought that just to affect
some kind of change, I'd grow a moustache. It was rather a silly looking
thing.... in any case Torrid Zone proved to be a money maker --
and I suspect that the fact had precious little to do with my moustache."
- Jimmy Cagney.
REVIEWS:
"Enjoyable
fast paced hokum with a plot borrowed from both the Front Page
and Red Dust."
- Leslie Halliwell.
