BLACKMAIL.
Edward
G Robinson & Ruth Hussey,
Gene Lockhart, Guinn Williams, Ester Dale.
Dir: H C Potter, 1939, MGM.
SYNOPSIS:
An
innocent man is released from prison after serving his sentence and is
then pounced on by a vicious blackmailer.
"I
suppose there never was a more wildly inappropriate mask worn in the
history of nomenclature, his non de guerre, E. G. Robinson, suggests
routine and a suburban house with a hose to water the geraniums. But
he, himself, is a short, swarthy, electrical creature of formidable dramatic
power and hands that can weave a hypnotic ballet in the motivating of
a scene."
- Alexander Woolcott.
REVIEWS:
"What
a sad thing it is to see this distinguished inhabitant of the Rogues'
Gallery, this Napoleon of crime, this indominably amoral spirit who belongs
with the borgias, feebly trying to go straight."
- New York Times.
"The family circuit will accept it as sufficient entertainment
for a suspensful evening. "
- Variety.
