THE
AMAZING
DR
CLITTERHOUSE.
Edward
G Robinson & Humphrey Bogart,
Claire Trevor, Gale Page, Donald Bloom.
Dir: Anatole Litvak,
1938, Warner Bros.
SYNOPSIS:
A
criminologist researcher joins a gangster's mob and, naturally, gets
addicted to crime.
"Jack
Warner was warned against using Robinson by his staff... they reasoned
that he would not succeed in the role because the audience would see
him as one of the gangsters, not one of the interlopers he was meant
to be. It was a long film to make but Robinson relished the role. When
it premièred in the Summer, though, Robinson had to admit his
error; critic after critic pointed out that he was miscast, although
they agreed he had acted well."
- Alan Gansberg, E G Robinson biographer.
REVIEWS:
"An
unquestionable winner... the picture inculcates a bit of the shocking
theme and modified romance." (what?)
- Variety.
"The story is ingenious but Litvak and his producing/acting
crew have so thoroughly kept the larking mood of it while setting up
the necessary mood of interest and suspense that it is hard to see where
conception leaves off the shaping of it into motion begins."
- Otis Ferguson. (whoever he is?)
"Amusing, suspenseful, well-acted comedy melodrama."
- Leslie Halliwell.
