EAST
IS
WEST.
Edward
G Robinson & Ruth Hussey,
Gene Lockhart, Guinn Williams, Ester Dale.
Dir: Monta Bell, 1930, Universal.
SYNOPSIS:
Why
anyone thought that Eddy Robinson looked remotely Chinese is beyond me
but (as in Hatchet Man) here he gives
his mob boss act an oriental twist.
"Robinson
resisted the film company's pleas to do the picture. He discussed the
offer with some Broadway friends. They told him to take the money. East
is West was less than a masterpiece and Robinson spent much of his off-camera
time dodging the advances of Lupe Velez, who was known to see all her
leading men as notches on her bedpost. He resisted, as he always would
with leading ladies."
- Alan Gansberg, E G Robinson biographer.
REVIEWS:
"Good
daily change grind meller."
- Variety. (?have
no idea what this means.)
"Muddled melodrama reminiscent of many silent
films."
- Leslie Halliwell.
