HELL
ON
FRISCO BAY.
Edward
G Robinson & some others including Alan Ladd.
Dir: Frank Tuttle, 1955, Jaguar.
SYNOPSIS:
Bitter
and twisted ex-cop hunts down the lowlife mob boss who framed him for
a murder. As in his 30s movies Edward G plays a brutal hooligan and like
in Key Largo, it climaxes on a little boat.
"Robinson
feared he was a dinosaur, a relic because of his age, and an outcast
because of his political past. Hell on Frisco Bay was directed by Frank
Tuttle who, like Robinson, had suffered at the hands of the HUAC [Hollywood's
anti-communist witch-hunters] and the two men dared not discuss what
happened in the past. Instead, Tuttle teased Robinson ever so gently
about finally being taller than a fellow actor. Alan Ladd was 5 feet
four inches and Robinson, even in his 60s, did better than that."
- Alan Gansberg, E G Robinson biographer.
REVIEWS:
"Tedious
actioner enlivened by the character parts and a violent climax."
- Leslie Halliwell.
