KID
GALAHD.
Edward
G Robinson & Bette Davis,
Humphrey Bogart, Harry Carey, Jayne
Bryan.
Dir: Michael Curtiz,
1937, Warner Bros.
SYNOPSIS:
Pre
Rocky boxing drama with a lowlife groomed for big-belted stardom and
the trainer brooding jealously in the background. At least the Elvis
remake had songs to give it some ooomph.
"In January
his studio put him to work on a film in which he played a shady boxing
manager with a heart of gold, Humphrey Bogart was the villain and Bette
Davis was Fluff, the boxer's moll. Robinson had originally suggested
a young starlet named Jane Wyman for the part but Jack Warner insisted
on Davis. Robinson protested that she wasn't soft and vulnerable enough,
'hard as steel' is how he described her to the bosses, the pair never
warmed to each other."
- Alan Gansberg, E G Robinson biographer.
REVIEWS:
"Good prizefight picture with action, melodrama and
names. Unusual in that women will like it."
- Variety.
