THE
LITTLE
GIANT.
Edward
G Robinson & Mary Astor,
Helen Vinson, Russell Hopton, Donald Dillaway.
Dir: Roy Del Ruth, 1933,
Warner Bros.
SYNOPSIS:
Eddy
Robinson parodies his Rico act in a comedy about a bootlegger coping
with post-prohibition society.
"The film's
title was obviously concocted to cash in on Robinson's previous great
success. Little Giant was set after prohibition, with Robinson as Bugs
Ahearn. He lusts after Helen Vinson, but ends up with the brighter and
more efficient Mary Astor. At last he got the girl!"
- Alan Gansberg, E G Robinson biographer.
REVIEWS:
"It
makes Robinson a comedy character surrounded by semi-travesty and the
fans are likely to resent it."
- Variety.
"Disappointingly unfunny gangster comedy which
never really gets going."
- Leslie Halliwell.
