THE
HOLE IN
THE
WALL.
Edward
G Robinson & Claudette Colbert,
David Newell, Nelly Savage, Donald Meek.
Dir: Robert Flory, 1929, Paramount.
SYNOPSIS:
Eddy
Robinson sets himself up for a lifetime in crime by playing a gangster
in this very, very early movie about a lovely, phony fortune teller who
plots a revenge scheme.
"Robinson
was reminded right away that film salaries were bigger than stage ones.
He played a gangster called The Fox who is in love with Claudette Colbert,
a woman seeking revenge against a matron who had her jailed for kidnapping
the matron's daughter. The Fox eventually turns himself in so that Colbert
can marry the newspaper reporter she really loves. In his first major
screen role Robinson did not get the girl."
- Alan Gansberg, E G Robinson biographer.
REVIEWS:
"Involved
melodrama, a primitive talkie notable chiefly for its stars."
- Leslie Halliwell.
