MANPOWER.
Edward
G Robinson & Marlene Dietrich
Frank McHugh, Barton
MacLane, Ward Bond.
Dir: Raoul Walsh, 1941,
Warner Bros.
SYNOPSIS:
I
have no idea what 'power company linesmen' are but two of them fall for
the same ex-jailbird gal. Eddy Robinson gets bumped off at the end to
clear the way for George and Marlene to get together and get their squelchies.
"Robinson
and George Raft were shooting a scene in which one of their drinking
buddies makes a snide remark about Dietrich and Raft has to keep Robinson
from getting into a fight. Instead of just brushing Robinson away, Raft
overdid it, rough-housing his fellow actor and pushing him around the
set. Robinson wheeled around, screamed 'What the hell is all this?'
to which Raft replied with some obscenities. Robinson said 'George,
you're a fool for carrying on in such an unprofessional manner. I came
here to do my work, not indulge in anything of this nature. It seems
impossible for me to continue.' Raft saw red, and punched Little
Caesar in the side. Robinson, tears in his eyes, walked off the set and
Robinson and Raft did not speak to each other for fifteen years."
- Alan Gansberg, E G Robinson biographer.
REVIEWS:
"The
pace and cutting are those of the best gangster films... the climax outdoes
anything the Lyceum may have known."
- Variety.
"Yet another variation on Tiger Shark, with vivid
fisticuff and storm sequences supporting the star performers."
- Leslie Halliwell.
