CONFESSIONS
OF
A
NAZI SPY.
Edward
G Robinson & Paul Lukas,
George Sanders, Francis Lederer, Henry O Neill.
Dir: Anatole Litvak,
1939, Warner Bros.
SYNOPSIS:
Ultra
serious cod-documentary style movie with earnest, frowning FBI suits
trying to weedle out evil Nazi scum from their lovely, honest United
States. A stodgy film at a grindingly slow pace.
A Personal Note from EGR
to Jack Warner:
"I want the gamut of my roles broadened,
but not from conceit or actor's temperament, but in order to do justice
to my capacities. I want again to express a strong desire to appear in
the international spy ring story you are going to do. I want to do that
for my people. You mentioned that the story may not be too good, but
I see no reason why efforts should not be expended to make it a knock
out story."
REVIEWS:
"Warner
Bros have declared war on Germany with this one... with this precedent
there is no way any producer could argue against dramatising any social
or political theme on the grounds that he's afraid of domestic or foreign
censorship. Everybody duck!"
- Pare Lorentz.
"One of the most sensationalist movie jobs on
record, workmanlike in every respect and sprang across the headlines."
- Otis Ferguson.
