OUTSIDE
THE
LAW.
Edward
G Robinson & Mary Nolan, Owen Moore.
Dir: Tod Browning, 1930, Universal.
SYNOPSIS:
Early, incompetent, scratchy, sketchy movie with the actors
not seeming to know where the bank robbery plot is going.
"Hollywood
conversation seemed vacuous to Robinson - meaningless gossip and chitchat
about the industry. He felt superior. Still, he liked the money. After
A Lady to Love was finished he accepted Universal's offer to make Outside
the Law. One more picture, and one more weekly cheque for $2, 500 wouldn't
hurt, but artistically he was unhappy. Robinson was a hood named Cobra
Collins, who (setting a pattern for future films) dies at the end of
the picture."
- Alan Gansberg, E G Robinson biographer.
REVIEWS:
"One
of the worst examples of claptrap since sound came in... no continuity
and the director lets the cast run wild."
- Variety.
