THE
WIDOW
FROM CHICAGO.
Edward
G Robinson & Alice White,
Neil Hamilton, Frank McHugh, E H Calvert.
Dir: John Ford, 1935, Columbia.
SYNOPSIS:
Some
vengeful woman hooks up with a gang to get back at the cunts who knocked
off her brother.
"Robinson
was not pleased with the film, which he considered lightweight. Once
again he felt he was playing Nick Scarsi from The Racket. He had
only third billing and very little actual dimension in the script. A
few days after it was completed, Hal Wallis summoned Robinson to his
office and showed him a script based upon a successful novel by W R Burnett.
Robinson knew the novel. The book was Little
Caesar."
- Alan Gansberg, E G Robinson biographer.
REVIEWS:
"Bottom-of-the-barrell
gangster drama, presented with little flair."
- Leslie Halliwell.
"Barely makes programme grade... will have to
struggle to break even."
- Variety.
